Samivel has mainly written poetic or humorous texts "for his children's books".
But before the 1940's war he wrote "l'Amateur d'Abîmes" which became one of the classics of alpine literature.
As a writer, Samivel was particularly attracted by the difficult style of the "Novella" (a short dramatic narrative with few characters).
Several are still published such as:
- "Contes à pics"
- "Contes des brillantes montagnes avant la nuit" ,
- "Il y aura de l'eau pour les cygnes" .
A major novel was published: "Le Fou d'Edenberg" (which was on the short list for the prix Goncourt in 1967); a novel which is of current interest today where Samivel has shown the mountain world he knows so well, his affection for the mountain people, using a sense of humour much appreciated by all those involved in environment conservation.
