Bottom of his art class ..., as he found making "plaster casts" deadly dull, he started in 1928 by doing draft cartoons, soon to be published by the Grenoble magazine "La Vie Alpine" (.

His very first book, a limited edition with colour plates, is "Sur les Planches (On skis)" (1931) preface "sur les planches".
"Sous l'Oeil des Choucas (Under the eye of the jackdaws)", with an introduction by Guido Rey, made his reputation (1931) (currently being published).
At the end of the 1940's war appeared "l'Opéra de Pics (Opera of the summits)" with a preface by Jean Giono (1944) (republished).
Then "Bonshommes de Neige (Snowmen)" (1947) a short comic graphic novel, in the style of the Töpffer books, "cartoons" according to the author, an avant garde of the comic.
Samivel also worked on major newspapers including Paris Soir, Le Figaro,
Les Nouvelles Littéraires etc....
