Samivel 1907 - 1992, a pseudonym taken from the Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens, was born under the name of Paul Gayet-Tancrède.
His career started in the 1930's with graphic art.
So appeared Sous l'oeil des Choucas (Under the eye of the jackdaws) followed by humorous drawings on mountaineering.
Later, in a more philosophical tone, appeared Opéra de Pics (Opera of the summits) with a preface by Jean Giono.
These two works, belonging to Samivel's mountaineering era, were inspired by ..." walks before dawn to the start of the glaciers, walks along couloirs towards the sun, reaching the summit and the outstanding beauty of a horizon where snow followed on from rocks..."
Samivel illustrated some distinguished authors, François Villon, Rabelais, Jean de la Fontaine, Swift, Charles Ferdinand Ramuz....
He wrote and illustrated children's books, Brun l'ours (Brown the bear), Les Malheurs d'Ysengrin (The misfortunes of Ysengrin), Goupil....
He wrote the series of Dumollet and a theatrical fairy story, La grande nuit de Merlin (The great night of Merlin) .
After the second world war he contributed to the magazine Nouvelles Littéraires.
He wrote articles and novellas illustrating the first page with humourous artistic drawings.
